Banksia 'Bird Song' (Small 140mm pot)
A dense, mounding hybrid banksia that lights up the garden with big golden-orange flower spikes through autumn and winter, when colour is scarce. The fine, soft, needle-like foliage keeps a neat rounded shape, and the nectar-rich brushes are a magnet for honeyeaters and other native birds. Give it sun and free-draining soil and it's a tough, low-fuss shrub for Canberra gardens.
Mature size: Approx. 1–2m H x 1–2m W; dense and mounding, easily kept more compact by pruning after flowering
Flowers: Large banksia spikes that open yellow and age to orange-red, autumn to winter
Foliage: Fine, narrow, deep green, evergreen
Growth habit: Dense, rounded, mounding shrub
Position: Full sun for best flowering; needs well-drained soil (use a raised bed or pot in heavy clay)
Water needs: Low once established; tolerates light frost
Soil: Free-draining, low-phosphorus soil. On heavy Canberra clay, dig in gypsum clay breaker and plant on a slight mound. In pots, use Native Osmocote Potting Mix.
Feeding: Sensitive to phosphorus, so use a native fertiliser only: Osmocote Native in spring, or Neutrog Bush Tucker as a liquid feed. Avoid general fertilisers and manures.
Maintenance: Low; light tip prune after flowering. Use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser only
Ideal for: Native and bird-attracting gardens, informal hedges, mass planting, feature planting and large pots
