Banksia 'Birthday Candles' (180mm pot)
A compact, mounding dwarf banksia with soft, needle-like green foliage that's smothered in upright golden-yellow flower spikes, tinged with orange-red, from autumn through to early spring. It's one of Australia's best-loved native shrubs, bringing colour to the garden through the cooler months and drawing in nectar-feeding birds. Tough and low maintenance once established, it handles Canberra's frosts and dry spells well, provided it's planted in free-draining soil.
Mature size: 0.4–0.6m high x 0.5–1m wide
Foliage: Fine, needle-like, evergreen green leaves
Flowers: Golden-yellow candle-shaped spikes with orange-red styles, autumn to early spring
Growth habit: Dense, compact and mound-forming
Position: Full sun to light shade (best flowering in full sun)
Climate: Moderately frost tolerant and drought tolerant once established
Water needs: Low; deep, occasional watering during long dry spells
Soil: Free-draining, low-phosphorus soil. On heavy Canberra clay, dig in gypsum clay breaker and plant on a slight mound. In pots, use Native Osmocote Potting Mix.
Feeding: Sensitive to phosphorus, so use a native fertiliser only: Osmocote Native in spring, or Neutrog Bush Tucker as a liquid feed. Avoid general fertilisers and manures.
Maintenance: Low; light trim after flowering, avoid cutting into old wood. Needs well-drained soil and a phosphorus-free native fertiliser
Ideal for: Native and wildlife gardens, rockeries, borders, mass plantings and pots
