Cordyline 'Red Star' (Medium 180mm pot)
Cordyline 'Red Star' is a bold feature plant with spiky, sword-like leaves in a rich burgundy-red that holds its colour all year. It brings instant structure and contrast to pots, courtyards, modern or native-look gardens, and is stunning against green foliage or grasses. Slow growing and low-fuss, it handles dry spells once established; give young plants a little shelter through their first Canberra winter.
Mature size: approx. 1.5-3m x 1m over many years; slower and smaller in pots
Foliage: long, strappy burgundy-red leaves in a starburst rosette
Flowers: grown for its foliage; mature plants can produce scented cream flower sprays
Growth habit: upright rosette that slowly forms a trunk
Position: full sun to part shade (best colour in sun)
Climate: tolerates frost once established; protect young plants from hard frosts
Water needs: low to moderate; needs good drainage
Soil: Well-drained soil improved with compost. Break up heavy Canberra clay with gypsum clay breaker. In pots, use Osmocote Premium Potting Mix.
Feeding: Osmocote All Purpose in spring, or Yates Dynamic Lifter for an organic feed. Seasol at planting and through summer helps with heat stress.
Maintenance: remove old lower leaves as needed
Ideal for: feature pots, courtyards, modern and native-look gardens
