Leptospermum petersonii Lemon-scented Tea Tree (Small 140mm pot)
A fast-growing native with fine, slightly weeping leaves that release a fresh lemon scent when brushed or crushed, and new growth flushed with red. Masses of small white flowers cover the plant in late spring and summer, bringing bees and other pollinators into the garden. It takes well to pruning for a soft screen or informal hedge and handles dry spells once established; give young plants a sheltered spot through their first Canberra winter.
- Mature size: approx. 3m x 1.5m (taller if left unpruned)
- Foliage: narrow, lemon-scented leaves with red-tinged new growth
- Flowers: small white flowers in late spring and summer
- Growth rate: fast
- Position: full sun to part shade
- Climate: drought tolerant once established; tolerates light frost, so protect young plants from hard frosts
- Water needs: low once established
- Soil: Well-drained soil. On heavy Canberra clay, dig in gypsum clay breaker before planting. In pots, use Native Osmocote Potting Mix.
- Feeding: Osmocote Native in spring, or Neutrog Bush Tucker as a liquid feed. Seasol at planting helps it settle in.
- Maintenance: trim after flowering to keep it dense
- Ideal for: screens, informal hedges, native and pollinator gardens
