Leucadendron 'Ebony' (Small 140mm pot)
Leucadendron 'Ebony' is a real statement plant, with glossy, near-black burgundy foliage that deepens in colour through the cooler months and is topped with rich red bracts from late winter into spring. A sport of the popular 'Safari Sunset', it brings striking year-round contrast against green and silver plants. Once settled in, it handles frosts down to around -7°C and needs little water, making it a hardy pick for a sunny Canberra garden with good drainage.
- Mature size: approx. 1.5m high x 1.5m wide
- Foliage: Evergreen, glossy near-black to deep burgundy
- Flowers: Deep red bracts, late winter to spring
- Growth habit: Dense, upright, rounded shrub
- Position: Full sun
- Climate: Frost tolerant to around -7°C once established; drought tolerant
- Water needs: Low once established
- Soil: Free-draining, low-phosphorus soil. On heavy Canberra clay, dig in gypsum clay breaker and plant on a slight mound. In pots, use Native Osmocote Potting Mix.
- Feeding: Sensitive to phosphorus, so use a native fertiliser only: Osmocote Native in spring, or Neutrog Bush Tucker as a liquid feed. Avoid general fertilisers and manures.
- Maintenance: Low. Needs well-drained soil and a low-phosphorus (native) fertiliser only. Trim after flowering to keep it bushy
- Ideal for: Colour contrast in borders, feature planting, pots, informal hedges and cut foliage
