Prostanthera ovalifolia (Small 140mm pot)

$18.50

A fast-growing native shrub that puts on one of the most spectacular spring displays of any Australian plant, with the whole bush disappearing under sprays of purple flowers. Its small, oval leaves release a fresh minty scent when brushed, so it's lovely beside a path. It does best in Canberra in a sheltered spot with good drainage and some protection from hot afternoon sun.

  • Mature size: Approx. 2-2.5m H x 1.5m W
  • Foliage: Small, oval, dark green, strongly mint-scented, evergreen
  • Flowers: Masses of purple flowers, spring
  • Growth habit: Upright, bushy shrub; fast growing
  • Position: Part shade to full sun, sheltered from strong wind; needs well-drained soil
  • Climate: Tolerates light to moderate frost; protect young plants from heavy frost
  • Water needs: Moderate; keep moist through dry spells, mulch well
  • Soil: Well-drained soil. On heavy Canberra clay, dig in gypsum clay breaker before planting. In pots, use Native Osmocote Potting Mix.
  • Feeding: Osmocote Native in spring, or Neutrog Bush Tucker as a liquid feed. Seasol at planting helps it settle in.
  • Maintenance: Prune by up to a third after flowering to keep it dense and long-lived
  • Ideal for: Informal screens, scented and native gardens, planting under tall trees, beside paths
