Protea 'Pink Ice' (Small 140mm pot)
Protea 'Pink Ice' is widely regarded as the hardiest of all the proteas, producing large, silky pink flower heads with a soft silvery sheen through autumn and winter. Its upright stems of grey-green leaves give it a striking, architectural look, and the long-lasting blooms make wonderful cut flowers. Once established it handles moderate frosts and dry spells well, so it's a reliable choice for a sunny, well-drained spot in Canberra gardens.
- Mature size: approx. 2–2.5m high x 2m wide
- Foliage: Evergreen, grey-green leaves on upright woody stems
- Flowers: Large pink blooms with silvery tips, autumn to winter
- Growth habit: Upright, bushy shrub
- Position: Full sun, sheltered from strong winds
- Climate: Frost tolerant to around -6°C once established (protect young plants from heavy frost in their first winter); drought tolerant once established
- Water needs: Water regularly in the first year, then low
- Soil: Free-draining, low-phosphorus soil. On heavy Canberra clay, dig in gypsum clay breaker and plant on a slight mound. In pots, use Native Osmocote Potting Mix.
- Feeding: Sensitive to phosphorus, so use a native fertiliser only: Osmocote Native in spring, or Neutrog Bush Tucker as a liquid feed. Avoid general fertilisers and manures.
- Maintenance: Low. Needs well-drained soil and a low-phosphorus (native) fertiliser only. Prune lightly after flowering
- Ideal for: Feature planting, cut-flower gardens, waterwise and native-style gardens, attracting birds
