Protea 'Venus' (Small 140mm pot)
A striking protea hybrid with long, soft green leaves and big goblet-shaped blooms that open pink and cream and deepen to rich red from late winter into spring. The nectar-rich flowers bring in honeyeaters, and they last for weeks in a vase. Give it full sun and free-draining soil and it grows into a tough, water-wise feature shrub for Canberra gardens; just shelter young plants from heavy frost in their first winter.
- Mature size: Approx. 3m H x 2m W
- Foliage: Long, narrow, soft green leaves with bronze-tinged new growth
- Flowers: Large pink and cream blooms ageing to deep red, late winter to spring
- Growth habit: Upright, bushy shrub
- Position: Full sun with good airflow; needs well-drained, slightly acidic soil
- Climate: Frost tolerant once established; protect young plants from heavy frost
- Water needs: Regular water while establishing; low once established
- Soil: Free-draining, low-phosphorus soil. On heavy Canberra clay, dig in gypsum clay breaker and plant on a slight mound. In pots, use Native Osmocote Potting Mix.
- Feeding: Sensitive to phosphorus, so use a native fertiliser only: Osmocote Native in spring, or Neutrog Bush Tucker as a liquid feed. Avoid general fertilisers and manures.
- Maintenance: Low; prune lightly after flowering (picking blooms counts). Use a low-phosphorus native fertiliser only
- Ideal for: Feature planting, informal screens, bird-attracting gardens, cut flowers
